FLORENCE, S.C. — The Clay Pot Coffee Shop will host a Bob Dylan Birthday Bash on Saturday to celebrate the music legend’s 79th birthday.

The bash will be held from 6-9 p.m. at the William H. Johnson Renaissance Dining Courtyard, located at the 100 block of South Dargan Street in Florence.

A few of Dylan’s favorite foods will be sold, including a variety of pan pizzas and a special blueberry dessert, said Clay Pot owner Peggy Brown

Doug Kight, host of open mic at Southern Hops, said there will be solo acoustic acts and a house band performing some of Dylan’s tunes as well. Rebecca Morning, Kenny Powell, Hilton McLeod, Hugh Holcomb and other local musicians are set to perform.

“I like local places that support local musicians and give them a venue to play,” Kight said. “Believe it or not, we have a lot of good talent in Florence.”

Kight said it is becoming popular for venues to host events honoring a specific musician.

“I think it’s a fun thing to do honoring a musician,” Kight said.

This is the first year the Clay Pot has hosted a birthday bash for Dylan. Brown said she would like to do the same thing for Michael Jackson later in the year.

“I can see us doing several other artists throughout the year,” Brown said.

Dylan is genre-defining artists whose cultural influence has spanned five decades.

“Dylan is probably one of the best songwriters America has ever had,” Kight said. “He’s still doing it. That’s what’s amazing.”
