COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — About the same number of people voted in this year's South Carolina Republican primary as voted in the last midterm primary in 2018. But state Election Commission data shows Democrats had about 60,000 fewer voters in their primary this year. Final turnout for Tuesday's vote was about 17% of registered voters, or 564,000 ballots cast out of 3.3 million registered voters in South Carolina. The most votes cast in a mid-term June primary remains in 2010, when more than 623,000 votes were cast. It also remains the heaviest Republican turnout. In comparison, 72% of South Carolinians — some 2.5 million voters — cast ballots in November 2020 when the president and other candidates were on the ballot.

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — Two Republican House incumbents in South Carolina who have drawn the ire of former President Donald Trump now find themselves facing tough primary challenges Tuesday. House members Nancy Mace and Tom Rice criticized Trump after the Jan. 6 insurrection, and Rice was among the 10 House Republicans who crossed party lines to vote to impeach him. In Nevada, Republican congressman Mark Amodei faces a primary challenge from the son of one of the state's most famous sports figures. Democratic House member Dina Titus faces an progressive challenger in the state's most liberal district. And in Maine, a former Republican congressman is looking to reclaim his old seat.

Vice President Kamala Harris is returning to South Carolina this week to headline a fundraising dinner for Democrats in the state. Party officials announced Monday Harris will be the keynote speaker at the Blue Palmetto Dinner on Friday in Columbia. The dinner comes just days before South Carolina's primary elections, where the contest for governor tops the statewide Democratic ballot. South Carolina also holds the first presidential balloting in the South. The state has already been playing host to a myriad of Republicans potentially setting themselves up for 2024 White House bids. Harris campaigned heavily in South Carolina during her own 2020 campaign but left the race before the state's primary. President Joe Biden has committed to tapping her as his 2024 running mate.
