After years of legal and ethical scandals swirling around Texas Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton, the state’s GOP-controlled House of Representatives has impeached him in a vote that automatically suspended him from office. The extraordinary and rarely used maneuver came Saturday in the final days of the legislative session. Paxton has allied himself closely with former President Donald Trump and the state’s hard-right conservatives, while House Republican leaders appear to have suddenly had enough of the allegations of wrongdoing that have long dogged Texas’ top lawyer.

A man charged with fatally shooting an Indianapolis police officer when she responded to a domestic violence call in 2020 is seeking an insanity defense as he tries to avoid the death penalty. Attorneys for Elliahs Dorsey filed a motion with the court Wednesday saying a report prepared by a doctor states he was suffering from a mental illness when he fatally wounded Indianapolis Officer Breann Leath. Authorities have said Leath and three other officers were responding to a domestic violence call involving Dorsey when she was shot to death through the door of an Indianapolis apartment. Dorsey faces one count of murder and four counts of attempted murder. A judge ruled this month that prosecutors can seek the death penalty against Dorsey.

The Texas House of Representatives has voted overwhelmingly to impeach GOP Attorney General Ken Paxton. A Republican-controlled House committee filed 20 articles of impeachment against Paxton on Thursday, including bribery and abuse of public trust. The GOP-led House voted to impeach Paxton on Saturday, forcing his immediate suspension. The allegations include attempts to interfere in lawsuits, improperly issuing legal opinions to benefit real estate developer Nate Paul, and firing, harassing and interfering with whistleblower staffers. Paul allegedly employed a woman with whom Paxton had an affair in exchange for legal help and paid for renovations to Paxton’s home. Paxton says the charges are based on “hearsay and gossip, parroting long-disproven claims.”

Vice President Kamala Harris has become the first woman to deliver a commencement speech at West Point. In her address, the vice president lauded graduating cadets for their noble sacrifice in serving their country. But she noted an “unsettled world” because of Russian aggression and the rising threats that China poses. Some 950 men and women took part in the graduation ceremony. While Harris visits West Point, New York, President Joe Biden heads to Colorado Springs, Colorado, on Thursday to dole out advice to graduates at the U.S. Air Force Academy. Earlier this month, the president was the commencement orator at Howard University, his vice president’s alma mater.

Illinois lawmakers have finally approved a new state budget, sending it to Democratic Gov. JB Pritzker for his signature with just over a month to spare before it takes effect with the new state fiscal year July 1. The Indiana House approved the $50.5 billion spending plan on a 73-38 vote just after 2:30 a.m. Saturday after it passed the Illinois Senate 34-22 early Friday. The General Assembly delivered the budget to Pritzker more than a week late after lawmakers failed to meet a self-imposed May 19 deadline to adjourn despite Democrats controlling both chambers.
