FLORENCE, S.C. – Morning News sports reporter Scott Chancey received national honors in writing and photography in the 2018 Associated Press Sports Editors (APSE) contest.

Chancey tied for eighth in column writing and tied for fourth in feature photography in APSE’s annual contest.

APSE is a national professional organization for sports journalists. During an APSE conference in February, industry leaders in sports chose the best work of their peers from across the nation in specific writing, digital and print contests. APSE divides the contest into four circulation categories.

The Morning News, which is in the APSE’s lowest circulation category, played up a division, and Chancey still earned national recognition. He was one of only two APSE members to be honored in this contest for both writing and photography. Chancey, who also was honored for a video project last year, now is the lone APSE member to have been nationally honored in a career for sports writing, sports photography and sports video production.

To be considered for column writing, sports writers must submit a collection of four columns. Chancey's four column entries for the APSE contest were:

Chancey did not become a columnist last year until September.

Chancey’s feature photo that was honored was one of NASCAR star Kyle Busch racing a go-kart against Darlington’s Hunter Herriott in Myrtle Beach:

Chancey has placed nationally five times for his career in the APSE contest. He finished second for best game story in 2008 and sixth for sports columns (five required column entries) in 2014.

In this year's South Carolina Press Association contest, Chancey placed third for best sports feature photo in the Morning News' circulation category:
