Florence VA Clinic hosting mini health fair

FLORENCE – The Florence VA Clinic is hosting a mini health fair in the lobby of the new facility on Celebration Boulevard to expand accessibility and awareness of care the VA clinic offers.
The idea came from Sandra Walker-Halliman, health promotion disease prevention program manager at Columbia Veterans Affairs Healthcare Systems.
FLORENCE – AESC remains committed to investing $1.6 billion in Florence County, economic development and company officials say.
“I do health promotion, disease prevention for chronic diseases for our veterans, and I feel like we really needed a forum to access in our rural areas, to expand accessibility of care and awareness of programs for our veterans for their health and well-being,” Walker-Halliman said.
She said the VA holds similar community outreach events at its main facility in Columbia, but it was time to expand those to their other branches to reach more veterans.
Hwasung Group Inc, an electrical and electronic components manufacturer, announced a new $5 million Florence County operation.
Expanding healthcare for veterans is more than just having a clinic nearby, she said.
“Veterans also need to know what services are available to them, how to access them and how to take an active role in their own individual health and wellness,” Walker-Halliman said.
The Florence VA clinic opened in June. The clinic is staffed by 55 healthcare professionals in a 26,000 square-foot facility, which is almost triple the size of the previous Florence VA clinic.

The clinic offers primary care, mental health services, women's healthcare, laboratory services and physical therapy, along with telehealth capabilities.
“The Florence Health Fair helps build on the commitment to bringing information and resources directly to veterans in the Pee Dee region,” Walker-Halliman said. “We want the event to also strengthen our connection with the Florence community even further and make it easier for veterans to learn about the services that are available through their local VA clinic, but also at the main facility.”
Since the Florence clinic opened, Walker-Halliman said they have seen 9,000 veterans and assisted in 45,000 outpatient visits.
The clinic is located at 1380 Celebration Blvd in Florence. It’s open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
The Mini Health Fair is on Nov. 6, from 9:30-11:30 a.m. in the front lobby.
