West squad slugs 4 homers to top East in CPL All-Star Game

FLORENCE, S.C. – Ted Bergquist admitted the power display his team put on Tuesday evening at Carolina Bank Field was a little bit unexpected.
But then again, you can’t really be too shocked considering the type of players up and down the lineup, the West All-Stars coach said.

“We got good pitches to hit and guys didn’t miss them,” Bergquist said. “That’s why you do an All-Star game – for guys like (Sam) York to be seen and to get a couple hits like that is fun for everybody.”
York connected on two of the West's four home runs as the long ball helped propel the home team to a 9-3 victory over the East squad in the CPL’s 25th edition of its All-Star Game.
“I was just sitting on the right pitch at the right time and made a really good move on it,” said York, the Martinsville infielder who’s committed to play at Ohio State. “It’s kind of hard to make a plan or keep a plan seeing a different pitcher every inning, so you have to go up and you have to be really aggressive on your pitch and your zone.
“And you can’t miss it, that’s for sure, because you don’t know what else he has in there he can throw at you.”
York didn’t miss in either of his at-bats. He went 2 for 2 with the two bombs, three RBIs and two runs scored to earn Hitter of the Game. His two-run shot gave the West squad the lead in the bottom of the second inning and he added a solo homer in the fourth.

The West All-Stars also got a three-run blast from Macon designated hitter Stewart Puckett and a solo shot from Forest City outfielder Tanner Britt.
Of the nine runs the West scored, seven came via the long ball, including the first six as Bergquist’s team grabbed control in the early innings.
“Now the pitchers can throw strikes and not worry about giving up a lead,” the West coach said of the early cushion. “They’re just pitching and staying ahead, so it makes it a lot easier.
“We’re cruising through innings say four through nine and they’re pressing.”
The West pitching staff also had a big night. Ten hurlers combined for 15 strikeouts and kept the East off the scoreboard for the final five frames – working out of a couple jams along the way.
“Honestly, we just said, 'Do you – go out and play your game, throw strikes and get ahead in counts. Bad things happen when we get behind in counts.'
“So, they get a runner or two on, we get a double play ball, we get a popup, we get out of some jams. So, it worked really well for the pitchers.”
It was Morehead City’s Sage Ferguson who got the top pitching honor, however. He tossed a perfect frame with two strikeouts to earn the Pitcher of the Game award afterwards.
Jakob Haynes, also from Morehead City, homered for the East and Peninsula’s Reece Moody had two hits.
Florence Flamingos right-hander Owen Hendry got the final two outs in the top of the ninth inning for the West team while former Hartsville High standout Jackson Moore went 0-for-2 at the plate.
