>> 1. Florence-Darlington Technical College news: The college announced a new 50,000-plus-square-foot facility in the Lake City downtown area. The college also announced a new culinary arts and hospitality program. Students will get hands-on experience at The Inn At The Crossroads.
>> 2. Superintendent changes: Randy Bridges, for Florence School District One, resigned. Florence County School District District Four filled its superintendent position by hiring Rechel Anderson, a first-time superintendent. Eddie Ingram left his position as Darlington County School District superintendent to become the Berkeley County superintendent.
>> 3. Francis Marion University news: The university announced purchasing and revamping the interior of the old post office building downtown. The building will house therapy programs. Also, the university’s Doctorate in Nursing Practice received final approval from the South Carolina Commission on Higher Education. This program and a speech and language pathology program are set to begin next year.
>> 4. Florence School District One facilities: A new Delmae Elementary School opened, and ground was broken for a new Southside Middle School. The school board held a community forum to get opinions on a facilities plan that called for a $266 million referendum vote. Creating a recommendation for facilities went back to committee. To get many students out of mobile units and in brick-and-mortar buildings, the board discussed reconfiguration. After community forums, the board chose to delay action on reconfiguration of elementary and middle schools.
>> 5. Darlington County School District completes one-to-one technology initiative: The district achieved its goal of being completely one-to-one in technology. Every student from grades 4K to 12 has a personal computing device. Younger students have iPads, and older students have laptops.
Worth mentioning: Actor Wesley Snipes formed a partnership with Florence-Darlington Technical College. ... Glenn Odom, a former Florence School District One board member, sent racial slurs in emails to a district office employee.
