HARTSVILLE - A Hartsvillian has been awarded the highest Moose honor. Julian T. Walters was awarded the Pilgrim Degree of Merit for “his outstanding service and continued devotion to the humanitarian programs of his fraternity.” Mr. Walters was one of 150 Moose members from all over the United States and Canada honored as recipients of the degree.
Marion M. Gandy was appointed this week by Mayor Robert K. Bass as a commissioner of the Housing Authority of Hartsville. He will fill the unexpired term of Robert Clawson Jr. who resigned recently when he moved to Charleston.
Seventy-four of the Palmetto State’s loveliest young ladies will be in Greenville next week for a busy round of activities that they’ll remember for the rest of their lives. One girl in particular will have her plans for the future changed when she is crowned Miss South Carolina. One of the pretty misses will represent Hartsville. She is Judi Rae Griggs, 20 year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. Ray Griggs, will compete. She will continue with the talent that helped her win Miss Hartsville. She will perform a medley of songs on the piano.

The Darlington County Board of education gave final approval June 29 to a fiscal 1994 general operations budget that will raise property taxes in the county by about one mill.
During recent budget meetings, Hartsville City Council decided to try a different approach to handling funds for capital improvements, instead of just appropriating the funds for whatever uses that the city departments deemed necessary, to decide to approve funding for specific projects.
“It’s the law of the land now, and I think the media ought to have wide access to our courtrooms. They certainly will in my courtroom,” Circuit Judge Edward B. Cottingham said in response to a recently expanded experiment with cameras in the courtroom.
A suspected tornado touched down July 5, causing damage in Darlington County. Four mobile homes, one occupied, and a future flea market suffered damage.
Miss Darlington Mica Watkins of Hartsville was the winner of the Community Service Scholarship Award at the Miss South Carolina Pageant.
Miss Hartsville Tonya Smith of Aiken won a non-finalist talent award.

The 2008-09 school year will bring significant changes to the Education Accountability Act. Specifically, the PACT test will be eliminated and replaced with another form of testing. The test will be replaced in the spring 2009 and will consist of a writing test in March and multiple-choice test in May.
